Promote conservation and preservation of critical plant or animal habitats; implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property; voluntarily contribute significant time or resources to environmental instructional programs, DEEP fish and wildlife projects, water quality monitoring programs, or lake, river or watershed associations; and donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.

Bristol Myers Squibb Co. (BMS), in conjunction with the Wildlife Habitat Council, has actively participated in several environmental projects aimed to increase and enhance species habitat on its 180-acre property. The bluebird box program began formally in 2004 which included a few boxes with several employee volunteers. Since 2004, the program has expanded to include over 30 employee/contractor volunteers and 27 boxes on site. Teams of volunteers check the 27 boxes located around the Wallingford site on a weekly basis from mid-April to mid-July and report observations which include nesting activity, number of eggs and number of chicks hatched and fledged in addition to performing routine maintenance activities.

In 2014, a 10-year retrospective analysis was conducted to help determine if any changes in nesting patterns and bird populations had occurred over the last decade. It was found that the average success rate of 86% fledged from hatchlings over this 10-year period. The main reason for nest failure once the chicks hatched is most likely due to predation. House sparrows and ant invasions appeared to be the main reason for nest failure in the first few years; but in the past 3 years, there have been more incidents of nesting material and feathers below the box, indicating possible predation by raccoons. After the failure of several nests in this manner, metal baffles were attached to the poles or axle grease was applied to the poles to prevent nest attacks. These measures have been successful, as no further signs of disturbance were noted once these preventive measures were used.

Based on the results of the analysis, the bluebird team will take several actions to improve the chick survival rate and discourage sparrows from building nest boxes.

Complete an Energy Star benchmarking of a building and/or qualify for the Energy Star Program; promote or sponsor a company-wide or facility-wide employee commute program; implement a facility-wide integrated pest management program; adopt a vacant lot, park, community garden, stretch of highway, or beach for a year; and donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.

Cartus has implemented and continually promotes a wide range of environmental programs for employees to take advantage of. Cartus is continually looking to enhance its program and recently has begun installing hands free toilets and sink in restrooms whenever replacements are required. They are also investigating the installation of hands free paper towel dispensers for all restrooms again in an effort to reduce paper usage on site. While these projects are in the beginning stages of implementations, as follows are some programs and services that have been implemented and/or enhanced over the last few years.

In 2010 Cartus received the Energy Star designation. During 2014, Cartus completed its Energy Star Benchmarking in accordance with current standards and again met the requirements to obtain the Energy Star designation. The company is currently reviewing options to complete the necessary engineering review of their property in order to submit the property for the Energy Star designation in 2015.

The Cartus conservation committee provides monthly site visits from their transit vendor to inform employees on the benefits of ride sharing. The vendor promotes CT Rides, Hart Bus (including the Route 7 link with a stop at Cartus' office building), and a Cartus in house town by town sign-up program. Since the program inception in 2006, over 600 riders have signed up for the Nu Rides part of CT Rides (ridesharing) program with over 350 actively using the service on a weekly basis. Cartus has two (2) transportation boards around the building with fliers and information for its employees to pick up regarding the different ride sharing options at the site. Cartus has five (5) preferred parking spaces for employees that rideshare. A quarterly raffle for all ride share members is held to determine the employee that will be awarded these spaces.

Cartus employs an Integrated Pest Management firm to provide preventive maintenance services to their cafeteria and kitchen areas and they monitor other exterior and interior areas of the facility and provide pest management services as necessary thoughout the year. All pest management products used on site are environmentally friendly products in accordance with contract specifications.

For the past nine years the Cartus Conservation Committee has taken part in the City of Danbury's Adopt-A-Street program. From April through October, one day a month, they volunteer to clean a street in Danbury. The street which their Conservation Committee has adopted is directly adjacent to their facility thus ensuring the entrance to their roadway is well kept for all visitors to the site.

The Cartus Conservation Committee has placed recycled bottle and can dispensers around the building to capture recycled bottles and cans. The cans and bottles are taken to a local recycle center and money raised from this recycling effort is to support Cartus environmental programs. In addition, each work area is equipped with both a trash bin and recycle bin for proper disposal of all recycling waste. Their waste management vendor has two separate compactors on site (one for solid waste and one for recycled waste) for proper disposal of such bins.

Cartus uses Office Max purchasing program (through its parent company Realogy) where they encourage their employees to purchase recycled material items. Currently, they are using about 30% recycled office products. In addition, approximately 25% of the copier paper they purchase is recycled. Battery and cell phone recycle program bins are also available on site for the employees to utilize.

Complete a greenhouse gas inventory for your municipality, business or educational institution; successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit; and execute an innovative purchasing program that promotes the procurement of recycled and environmentally preferable products.

Coilplus purchased a hybrid vehicle to reduce its emissions. The company purchased a CEE Tier 3 refrigerator that uses less energy per year than a 40 watt light bulb. Estimated energy cost is $37/year. This is the industry's most energy efficient available.

Colt's Manufacturing Company, LLC
Hartford, CT

Implement manufacturing processes that eliminate or significantly reduce the quantity or toxicity of a facility's waste stream.

The Colt's Manufacturing Company, LLC, has eliminated the hazardous waste stream by replacing solvent based cleaning, degreasing, and corrosion inhibitor products with environmental and user friendly eco-solutions.

The disposal of 3,600 gallons per year of solvent based products has been eliminated and replaced with new Eco-friendly cleaners that generate 1,500 gallons per year of non-hazardous (CT regulated) waste, resulting in a reduction of generated waste product by 58%.

Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company
East Hampton, CT

Successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit.

The Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CYAPCO) has successfully completed the long-term groundwater monitoring program at its Haddam Neck Plant (HNP) located in Haddam Neck, Connecticut, and it is in the process of terminating its Stewardship permit. The termination of the company's Stewardship Permit documents the successful environmental restoration of the former nuclear reactor site and the completion of all the required federal and state corrective action measures necessary to release the site for unrestricted use.

The Stewardship permit, granted in 2007, stated that all corrective action measures required at the site pursuant to the CT General Statutes (CGS) and the Regulations of CT State Agencies (RCSA) had been completed subject to post-remediation groundwater monitoring. Following completion of plant decommissioning, the groundwater monitoring program began in June 2007 and continued under Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) oversight until 2013. During this period, the CT DEEP additionally sampled 126 water supply wells near the plant and across the Connecticut River and found no CY related radioactivity or chemical contamination.

Groundwater monitoring summary: Groundwater monitoring was conducted to verify that the hydrogeology of the HNP is understood; data from the ongoing monitoring program supports the Conceptual Site Model (CSM); soil and groundwater remediation was effective; groundwater plumes are stable/decreasing; and radionuclide and chemical concentrations in groundwater satisfy the applicable cleanup criteria.

Status summary for groundwater monitoring for chemical constituents: The data collected under the long-term groundwater sampling program indicated that the remediation of chemical constituents at the HNP was successful. A total of 36 groundwater monitoring wells were sampled to demonstrate compliance with the DEEP RSRs and other DEEP approved numeric criteria during this program. Sampling results for chemical constituents have met the monitoring requirements prescribed in the DEEP RSRs. Based on the results collected to date, groundwater monitoring for chemical constituents has been completed at all locations and has demonstrated RSR compliance.

Status summary for groundwater monitoring for radiological constituents: The data collected under the long-term groundwater sampling program indicates that the remediation of radiological parameters at the HNP was successful. A total of 42 locations were sampled from 39 groundwater monitoring wells (including multi-level wells) to demonstrate compliance with the DEEP RSRs and other DEEP approved numeric criteria during this program. Based on the results collected to date, groundwater monitoring for radiological parameters has been completed at all locations and has demonstrated regulatory compliance.

Groundwater monitoring conclusions: A total of 36 monitoring well locations were sampled for chemical constituents (excluding boron) and 42 locations were sampled for radiological constituents from a total of 62 locations during this long-term groundwater monitoring program. All 62 of the monitoring locations sampled had results that were below detectable limits, or had detected concentrations of constituents of concern (COCs) below applicable regulatory criteria for four consecutive quarters or more. Sampling requirements demonstrate compliance with the RSRs or other DEEP approved numerical criteria and has now been completed for monitoring wells included in the Monitoring Plan.

Covanta Southeastern Connecticut Resource Recovery Facility

Reduce or eliminate the use of elemental mercury or products containing elemental mercury; successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit; adopt a vacant lot, park, community garden, stretch of highway, or beach for a year; and voluntarily contribute significant time or resources to environmental instructional programs.

Covanta SECONN partnered with SCRRRA at Mystic Aquarium's Earth week to educate the public about reducing, reusing, and recycling from April 16-22, 2014. About 136 man hours were donated to support this event.

Covanta SECONN has also conducted two (2) Adopt-A-Highway work days for the section of Route 12 that leads to and from the facility. Dates were 10/25/13 and 07/09/14.

Covanta SECONN has participated in the 2014 local Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days that have been conducted in their region in order to educate the public about mercury containing devices and the proper disposal of these items.

Covanta SECONN has increased the facility's recycling through a more efficient ferrous metal recovery system and the installation of a non-ferrous recovery system. Ferrous recovery has increased approximately 39% and SECONN has recycled approximately 600 tons of non-ferrous to date supporting the state's recycling efforts.

ESPN, Inc.
Bristol, CT

Design and develop building projects that fulfill Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requirements; implement a project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions consistent with Connecticut’s Climate Change initiatives in one of the following sectors: transportation, agriculture, forestry or waste, electricity generation, education and outreach; install a 100% recycled process or cooling water system; and separate organic materials at schools or cafeterias for composting or animal feed.

ESPN, Inc. has incorporated LEED in its buildings. Its Digital Center 2 is a world-class television production facility that integrates sustainable and energy efficiency objectives alongside cutting edge technical sophistication. The building is a four-story facility with two floors of technical production and studio space sandwiched between the basement and mezzanine levels housing the mission-critical electrical and cooling plants for the facility. This 194,000 square foot building has a USGBC LEED NC 2.2 target of "certified".

HLW engineers, following ESPN's directive, employed high efficiency electric water chillers with adaptive frequency drives, super-premium efficiency motors for all pumps and fans and utilized Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's) to control these motors. Direct Digital Control (DDC) manages the HVAC sequence of operation including CO2 Monitoring for Demand Control Ventilation.

Water efficiency was targeted by collecting air handler condensate water and site ground water. These sources (after chemical treatment) were used for cooling tower make-up and toilet flushing thereby reducing dependency on potable water for these routine tasks.

The architects concentrated on the building envelope materials such as the high-reflectivity roof membrane to reduce the heat island effect. High-R glazing was deployed on the south and west facades of the building to reduce thermal gain. The north and east facades were wrapped with a combination of insulated metal panels and cementatious fiberglass panels.

Landscape designers selected hardy, native species for the planting materials. These selections were vital in meeting the zero portable water use goal for irrigation.

The combined leadership of ESPN stakeholders, the efforts of the consultant team and construction manager, The Associated Construction Company, along with some significant heavy-lifting on the part of YR&G resulted in this project being considered for a LEED "Certified" award.

ESPN's ongoing initiative include campus-wide composting and recycling which in 2013 weighed in at 124.98 tons and 1362 tons, respectively. ESPN's 2014 quarterly waste diversion rate averaged 95% from the landfill through composting, recycling and waste to energy.

Innovative Waste Management:
Biannual employee electronic waste collection events encourage regular employee participation and enthusiasm for recycling, and keep over 42 tons of electronics out of the landfill since its inception. They also have permanent, year-round collection of unwanted athletic shoes that are recycled into playground material. In 2014, they recycled 25,129 lbs. of employees' electronics (a 25% increase from 2013), and 1,120 lbs of shoes (a 35% increase from 2013).

Energy Efficiency:
The estimated annual electricity savings was 196,193 kWh. In 2014, outside the buildings 11, 12 and 13 replaced the existing light pole and post fixtures around the pond with high-efficiency LED fixtures which saves 116,959 kWh annually: 38 type A pole fixtures, 19 type A1 pole fixtures, 14 type A2 pole fixtures, 11 type B pole fixtures, 11 type C post fixtures.

In 2014, all the light fixtures in the seven (7) stairwells of buildings 1 and 3 were replaced with high-efficiency LEDs . This saves about 11,022 kWh annually.

The 2x2' lighting fixtures at the North Campus building were replaced with efficient LEDs, and added dimmers set to half-power for color match and further reduce energy consumption. This saves about 68,212 kWh annually.

The Chapman Manufacturing Company

Execute an innovative purchasing program that promotes the procurement of recycled and environmentally preferable products.

The Chapman Manufacturing Company instituted a purchasing guideline for paper products including paper towels and copy paper, in addition to recycling all cardboard, oil, coolant and scrap metal. The guideline requires that the products contain recycled materials which has a positive effect on the environment as it helps to save trees and divert waste paper from landfills.

Although Chapman sends many shipments daily, it does not purchase any packing material and uses 100% re-used or recycled materials. Used office paper, catalogs, and old brochures are shredded daily to use as packing. Bubble wrap, air plus packing bags and packing peanuts are reused from shipments sent to Chapman or the company's team members can bring them from home.

The Durham Manufacturing Company
Durham, CT

Implement manufacturing processes that eliminate or significantly reduce the quantity or toxicity of a facility's waste stream.

The Durham Manufacturing Company converted two pre-treatment/wash lines over to a non-phosphate process during 2014. This conversion to a "green" system constitutes some additional work to manage the process in the facility but it also allows the company to eliminate the use of phosphate chemicals formerly used to clean oil off the products. During the conversion process, the company has saved approximately 3,200 kWh of electricity usage by eliminating air dryers/compressor usage. This process has allowed the company to eliminate the use and disposal of 3000 gallons of water each week by eliminating one cleaning stage (1500 gallons each) per wash. This equates to 150,000 gallons of water per year (3,000 gallons per week x 50 weeks).
