Aptar - Stratford
Stratford, CT

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%.

Aptar-Stratford constructed a new warehouse facility incorporating energy efficiency as a key component into the planning process. The following higher efficient items/models were incorporated: high efficiency T8 lighting, occupancy sensors, high efficiency HVAC units, opportunity battery charges, condensing furnace (natural gas), LED outdoor lighting and cool roofing and insulation which generated a total annual electricity savings of 254,130 kWh.

The company also participated in the Connecticut's Energy Efficiency program, the Energy Conscious Blueprint and was recognized for energy sustainability and environmental stewardship in Connecticut. 

The United Illuminating Company worked with Aptar-Stratford to design the warehouse that incorporated high efficiency items reducing Aptar's annual cost by approximately $27,719.

Aptar - Torrington
Torrington, CT

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%.

Aptar - Torrington completed two separate projects in 2013, the cooling tower shut-down and the HVAC retro-commissioning. Aptar-Torrington's corporate purchasing policy was changed to encourage the purchase of new injection molding machines that are all-electric models, thereby eliminating the hydraulic oil associated with older machines, reducing electricity use per machine by at least one third, and eliminating the need for cooling water to cool the hydraulic system. Over time, as older molding machines are replaced with new electric ones the cooling load is substantially reduced. As of November 2013, the Torrington plant has been able to completely shut down one of its cooling towers because of this effort. This has resulted in 143,716 kilo-watt hours saved annually and the reduction of 200 gallons per minute of cooling water.

The second project, HVAC retro-commissioning, completed in 2013, included an analysis of cooling distribution across the production floor. Utilizing real-time sensors and data loggers, the company discovered poor cooling distribution with an average discrepancy of 10 degrees across the floor. As a result, the HVAC system was retro-commissioned resulting in a demand energy savings of 70kW with an estimated 21,000 kWh/cooling season electricity savings.

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Ridgefield, CT

Implement manufacturing processes that eliminate or significantly reduce the quantity or toxicity of a facility’s waste stream and successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit.

In 2013 Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., began the implementation of its BE Green program to conserve energy, reduce CO2 emissions, reduce the use of natural resources, and increase the level of recycling site wide. One important part of the program is engaging employees in identifying ideas and opportunities to improve their environmental performance. The BE Green team implemented an innovative program that includes a web-based BE Green idea catcher and a formal recognition process. The BE Green team sends an immediate thank you for each idea received, reviews the submissions and determines if the idea should be approved for implementation; studied further; has already been considered; or is not currently appropriate.

Each quarter the top three submitters receive a small award, a certificate of appreciation, and are thanked at a department-wide ceremony hosted by the employee's supervisor and vice president. 

To date, more than 12 employees have been recognized for ideas such as purchasing simulation software to calculate the most efficient way to perform solvent distillation and extraction protocols to reduce solvent consumption during processing; using recovered solvents instead of virgin materials for cleaning operations; replacing paper towels with hand dryers, replacing water coolers with water bottle filling stations that have a digital counter that shows how many plastic bottles are saved from the landfills by using the refilling station; turning off unused chillers and compressors over the weekend; implementing a meatless Monday program to encourage better and more sustainable eating habits (a meat-based diet requires approximately 7 times more land than a plant-based diet and generates more greenhouse gas emissions).

Drug discovery and development has become increasingly challenging in recent years. Continuous methods, such as flow chemistry, can offer increased safety, energy efficiency, scalability, and reproducibility which are well aligned with the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. Flow Chemistry was recently acknowledged as one of the key research areas for green chemistry and engineering by the American Chemical Society's Green Chemistry Institute Pharmaceutical Round-Table.

Many chemically efficient transformations normally performed in batch mode have safety risks due to the use of flammable or reactive reagents, or harsh reaction conditions (e.g. temperatures >250 C). Finding ways to reduce such risks is an important goal of green chemistry.

In 2013, a team of chemists and engineers in Boehringer Ingelheim's Chemical Development department successfully developed and implemented Continuous Flow technology for two key chemical transformations. This was a tremendous BI-wide accomplishment that earned the team the 2013 Chemical Development Green Chemistry Award.

Using Continuous Flow technology with in-house-built small-volume flow reactors, the team was able to develop robust and more energy efficient processes from bench-top to kilogram scale. These two in-house uses of Flow Chemistry produced a positive impact on safety, quality, timeline, process efficiency, energy savings and better environmental performance in API production at Boehringer Ingelheim.

Danbury, CT

Complete an Energy Star benchmarking of a building and/or qualify for the Energy Star Program; promote or sponsor a company-wide or facility-wide employee commute program; implement a facility-wide integrated pest management program; adopt a vacant lot, park, community garden, stretch of highway, or beach for a year; and donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.

Cartus has enhanced previously implemented programs and services over the last few years. The Cartus Conservation Committee provides monthly site visits from its Transit vendor to inform employees on the benefits of ride sharing. The vendor promotes Nu-Ride, Hart Bus and a Cartus in house town by town sign-up program. Since the program's inception in 2006, Cartus has over 600 riders who have signed up for the Nu-Ride (ridesharing) program with over 350 actively using the service on a weekly basis.

Additionally, the committee promotes a yearly Cartus Ride Share Day in October to encourage employees to share a ride to work for one day. This day is promoted with signs and banners around the building. There is also a raffle with gas cards for the winners, an incentive of five preferred parking spaces for the employees who share a ride.

Cartus hires the services of an integrated pest management firm to provide preventive maintenance services to its cafeteria and kitchen areas bi-monthly. All the pest management products used on site are environmentally friendly in accordance with contract specifications.

For the past nine years, the Cartus Conservation Committee has taken part in the City of Danbury's Adopt-A-Street-Program. From April through October, once a month, Cartus volunteers to clean a street in Danbury.

The committee placed recycled bottle and can dispensers around the building to capture recycled bottle and cans. The bottles and cans are taken to a local recycle center.

The money raised from this recycling effort is to support Cartus' environmental programs. In addition, each work area is equipped with a trash and recycle bin for proper disposal of all waste. The company's waste management vendor has two separate compactors on site (one for solid waste and one for recycled waste) for proper disposal of such bins.

Cartus uses Staples purchasing program (through its parent company Realogy) where employees are encouraged to purchase items made from recycled materials. Currently Cartus uses about 30% recycled office products and approximately 25% of the copier paper purchased is recycled. Battery and cell phone recycle program bins are available on site for employees to utilize.

Chapman Manufacturing Company
Durham, CT

Implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property.

The Chapman Manufacturing Company created a wildlife-friendly garden. The plantings around the shop include native species such as American Dogwood, Mountain Laurel, Sumac and Aster. Several truck loads of invasive species were removed such as multi-flora rose. The exterior master planning process includes adding more native species into the landscape.

The property includes a naturally occurring three season stream, and is backed by a large wetlands. The company also planted cover for wildlife. There are several mini-ecosystems on the property including dense thickets, open foraging spaces, high grassy areas, wetlands and many trees. The large variety of vegetation on the property provides ample opportunity for local wildlife to call home and raise their young. In fact, there is a family of deer (mom and 3 babies) that appear most mornings and evenings to forage. The lights are turned off at night to ensure there is no light pollution to scare animals.

In August 2013, Chapman Manufacturing became a certified (certificate # 171,350) wildlife habitat through the National Wildlife Federation.

Waterbury, CT

Complete an Energy Star benchmarking of a building and/or qualify for the Energy Star Program; certify to ISO 14001; and document and implement a facility-wide pollution prevention plan.

Coilplus continues to promote ISO 14001:2004 and single stream recycling programs. The company is in the final stages of completing an energy reduction program. Working with Earthlight and CL&P, Coilplus just installed a programmable LED lighting system in the manufacturing and warehouse areas as well as office lighting upgrades. Coilplus has upgraded its HVAC roof units and installed a new energy efficient warehouse furnace.

ESPN, Inc.
Bristol, CT 

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%; successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit; separate organic materials at schools or cafeterias for composting or animal feed; promote conservation and preservation of critical plan or animal habitats; voluntarily contribute significant time or resources to environmental program; and donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.

ESPN, Inc. carried out several environmental projects in 2013. The project activities included: 1) promote conservation: more than 15 employees donated 63 hours of volunteering to restoring nature trails at Sessions Woods Wildlife Management area, helping to conserve wildlife habitat and the trails that let us appreciate Connecticut's natural beauty; 2) reduction of GHG emissions: on campus, recent energy efficiency retrofits have saved more than 436 MWh annually. HVAC projects - including three 375-ton energy efficient water-cooled chillers installed in Building 13 with an annual estimated savings of 671 MWh; 3) composting: the company's ongoing initiatives include campus-wide composting and recycling which in 2013 weighed in at 116.6 tons and 1059.8 tons, respectively. ESPN's 2013 quarterly waste diversion rate averaged 92% from the landfill through composting, recycling and waste to energy; 4) innovative waste management: biannual, employee electronic waste collection events encourage regular employee participation and enthusiasm for recycling, and keep over 30 tons of electronics out of the landfill since its inception. They also have permanent, year-round collection of unwanted athletic shoes that are recycled into playground material. In 2013, employees recycled 18,850 lbs of electronics and 720 lbs of shoes; and 5) energy efficiency: the driveway lighting fixtures were replaced with 9 LED fixtures; the estimated annual electricity savings is 10,643 kWh which results in 138,364 kWh lifetime savings; parking lot fixtures were changed to LED fixtures reducing the amount of fixtures to 74 and providing annual estimated electricity savings of 120,288 kWh with 1,563,743 lifetime savings; removed the metal halide lamps from the parking lot lighting fixtures at the child care center and replaced them with LED lamps; the CEGF-2 interior light fixtures were replaced with high-bay LED; teleport driveway bollard fixtures were changed to LED resulting in annual electricity savings of 12,956 kWh (168,429 kWh lifetime savings); lamp replacement and occupancy sensor installation projects with an estimated annual electricity savings of 185, 817 kWh (1,674,036 lifetime savings).

Firestone Building Products
Bristol, CT 

Implement clean energy generation projects utilizing fuel cells, solar, geothermal or wind power.

In 2013 Firestone Building Products installed a solar panel array system at its facility located in Bristol, CT. The system consists of a 123 kW 24,800 square foot solar panel array arranged as follows: a) 30 kW Lumeta L340A; b) 30 kW Unisolar ePVL 144 - details: 209 - 1.2'x17.8' flexible amorphous silicon solar laminates; c) 2-30kW Sharp NU-Q240F2 (or Yingli YL 240P-29b) Crystalline poly-silicon panels with panel claw grizzly bear mtd. The system will produce 115,211 kWH annually with savings of $23,043.

Philson Anodizing, Inc.
Watertown, CT 

Complete a greenhouse gas inventory for your municipality, business or educational institution.

Philson Anodizing, Inc., had a company-wide Carbon Footprint done as a baseline in 2007. They measured carbon dioxide equivalents of their scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions following WRI/WBCSD internationally accepted protocols. Over the course of the next six years they conducted various energy and waste reduction projects. In 2013, the company re-assessed the carbon footprint resulting in reduction from 1,677 tons to 703 tons, a 58% reduction in size. The largest contributor to this reduction is the switching from fuel oil to natural gas in the steam boiler. Other areas that were reduced include corporate travel, shortening delivery truck routes, and more bus commuting by employees.

Pratt & Whitney -Facilities & Services Department
East Hartford, CT

Successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit and implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property.

Pratt & Whitney (P&W) implemented an office paper recycling program in an effort to reduce waste and meet sustainability goals. P&W purchased its own shredding and baling equipment to securely destroy paper. After the paper is shredded, it is sent to a paper mill which transforms the shreds into toilet paper. P&W recently began purchasing 100% recycled toilet paper from the paper mill's distribution center.

By not utilizing virgin materials, P&W will positively affect the environment, and reduce the amount of energy, water, oil and trees consumed during the production of paper goods. It will also reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated during that process by approximately 210 metric tons of carbon equivalent.

P&W volunteers joined together at Hockanum Elementary School on Saturday, September 24, 2013 to help improve the buildings and landscaping as a part of an international effort to create greener, healthier school environments. This was one of 15 "green Apple Day of Service" projects sponsored by P& W and its parent company United Technologies Corp. This event was a collaborative effort between Goodwin College and the East Hartford Board of Education. Approximately 30 employees volunteered at the school at 191 Main Street in East Hartford.

The Orchards at Southington
Southington, CT 

Improve public access to shore, waterfront, private lands, or streams through voluntary projects; promote conservation and preservation of critical plant or animal habitats; implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property; voluntarily contribute significant time or resources to environmental instructional programs, DEEP fish and wildlife projects, water quality monitoring programs, or lake, river or watershed associations; and donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.


The Orchards at Southington is a non-profit organization independent and assisted living community located in the heart of central Connecticut. As a leader in environmental stewardship among senior care providers, The Orchards made its green program part of a larger initiative to enlist its stakeholders, residents, staff and families as partners in the effort. 

The Orchards is a participating member of the Federal EPA's Waste Wise Program and Food Recovery Program where participants volunteer to meet goals to reduce and recycle municipal solid waste and selected industrial wastes. The Waste Wise program challenges businesses to reduce environmental impact by tracking what and how they reduce waste. The Food Recovery Challenge commits you to reducing the amount of food waste you send to landfills through prevention, donation, and recycling.

The Orchards "Come Grow With Us" program is a partnership with American Forests, a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protect and restore forest ecosystems. For every new staff person and resident to the Orchards, a tree is planted in their honor by American Forests in an area of the country in need of restoration. 

Donations made to the American Forests for this program are funded by their "You Can Do It" recycling campaign of redeemable bottles and cans.

The National Wildlife Federation confirmed the Orchards’ application for its grounds and Serenity Garden to be a certified wildlife habitat. This certification corresponds with Orchards’ commitment to practicing sustainable gardening techniques such as eliminating pesticides, water conservation, planting native species as well as providing the four habitat components of food, water, cover and a place to raise young. This past spring, The Orchards became a participant in the Connecticut DEEP Wildlife Divisions Bluebird Restoration Project. They obtained wood which the DEEP acquires from fallen trees in the state's forests. Their maintenance team constructed the bluebird nesting houses and they were strategically placed in the Serenity Garden per the state's suggested guidelines. Resident volunteers monitored the activity around the Bluebird houses throughout the nesting season. Each resident was provided with a journal to write their observations and log activity on the Bluebird houses during the summer months. All information collected from the journals was sent to the Wildlife Division in September. The journaling of the Bluebird houses will resume in the spring of 2014 to assess the "comeback" of the species in our state. Two other bird projects have been started in the Serenity Garden. The Garden Lunch Buddies project is part of a citizens' science project called "Wild About Science" that promotes curiosity and learning about the relationships between humans and wildlife.  They made two life-size figures; a girl and a boy by stuffing their clothes with straw and the heads of the figures are made out of reusable plastic white pumpkins that the residents' art teacher painted friendly faces on. Both buddies were given a seat together in the garden and hold bowls filled with bird seed on their laps. This allows the buddies to become a natural part of the garden's habitat and visual cues in hope that one day the birds are comfortable enough to feed from the bowl when the lunch buddy is replaced by a staff member or resident. It took five weeks for the birds to begin feeling comfortable with feeding around the buddies. The Orchards is seeking volunteers to replace a buddy in the garden to see what happens.

They have also teamed up with Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology's Feeder Watch Program. This study monitors which bird species visit feeders at thousands of locations across the continent every winter. Resident volunteers will be using a picture book of backyard birds for reference while they journal the activity at the feeders during the winter months. All the information gathered was sent back to Cornell University in the beginning of April 2014.

On September 14, 2013 a group of staff and their families from the Orchards partnered with the Sierra Club of Madison in the Save the Sound's 28th Annual Ocean Conservancy International Beach Clean-up at Hammonasset Beach in Madison.

Suffield, CT

Windsor Marketing Group is an in-store shopper marketing agency that operates in an environmentally, economically and socially responsible manner. The agency has a long tradition of outstanding environmental stewardship, including recycling 100% of its waste paper, utilizing soy-based inks and UV ink printing technology to eliminate toxic emissions and reusing excess color inks through its ink recycling efforts. In the past 18 months, Windsor Marketing Group has installed occupancy sensors in its warehouse so lights will turn on and off automatically when no one is there. Additionally, they installed a T5 lighting system throughout the entire building and use partial lighting in its offices to reduce energy consumption and trim costs. And lastly, the company replaced all the parking lot lights with energy efficient LEDs.

Another key platform in its sustainability program is expanding the number of 'green' products offered to its clients. In an effort to reduce the number of wooden pallets consumed, Windsor Marketing Group started utilizing plastic pallets, for internal use, and they just introduced a ‘deep green' skid-pallet. It is a hexacomb-based paper skid-pallet that contains approximately 11% recycled material, is SFI (sustainable forestry initiative) certified, and 100% recyclable.
