In 2010, Aptar - Stratford had an energy audit performed to identify areas where they might reduce their carbon footprint. The company replaced four Heating and Ventillating Air Condition (HVAC) units with high efficiency HVAC units resulting in the energy savings of >9,500 KwH and installed one new dock seal, eight pit masters, and eight weatherseals at the shipping and receiving docks. The project reduced energy consumption by >93,000 KwH. Aptar – Stratford held its 4th annual employee Electronics Waste Collection yielding two gaylords of e-waste. An energy team has been established and is tasked with prioritizing energy projects to be completed in 2011 onward.

Aptar - Torrington
Torrington, CT

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%.

Aptar - Torrington replaced four hydraulic molding machines with electric molding machines saving over 65% of the energy used to run the hydraulic machines. Additional bonuses include: mechanical separation of runner and parts in electric machines; no heat exchanger needed; one mold heater for six machines (one heater per machine hydraulic machines); and increased output due to reduction of cycle time from 11 seconds to 5.5. The average KwH for electric is 1.1. and for hydraulic is 12.2. No chiller or tower load to electric machine (not calculated in KwH savings).

Branson Ultrasonics Corporation
Danbury, CT

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%.

Branson Ultrasonics Corporation replaced inefficient facility air compressor with a 50 HP, energy efficient, variable speed drive unit designed to save 112,185 kwh/year of electricity consumption. The return on investment is estimated to be less than two years. In addition, an exhaust air waste heat recovery heat exchanger was installed for space heating resulting in an annual natural gas saving of 1,755 ccf.

Brewer Bruce and Johnson's Marina
Branford, CT

Sponsor a river, beach, or neighborhood clean-up day and donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.

John McMahon from Brewer Bruce and Johnson's Marina assisted in the removal of a 35 foot 1957 wooden cabin cruiser that occupied the shallows of the Branford River adjacent to the Branford State Boat Launch for almost one year, during which time the boat owner made it clear that he did not have the means to effect the removal. Brewer Bruce and Johnson's Marina provided and placed the oil boom around the boat prior to the off-lifting of the fuel and other liquids to contain any inadvertent spills, of which there were none.

Edible Arrangements International
Wallingford, CT

Voluntarily convert or retrofit existing diesel-powered fleet or off-road construction vehicles to significantly reduce air emissions.

Edible Arrangements (EA), reduced its carbon footprint by converting to a more fuel efficient delivery vehicle with a battery-powered refrigeration system. New stores only use this van, and they are turning over their fleet of 1300 vans in the United States and Canada. EA switched from the E150 (12 mpg) to the Ford Transit (24 mpg) that uses a battery-powered refrigeration unit.
Because vans must be pre-cooled to maintain product freshness, they eliminated two hours of running time for each van 365 days/year, saving 27 percent of fuel per van annually.
The all-electric systems offer shore power, allowing drivers to plug into standard electric outlets rather than use fuel to refrigerate the vans. Once unplugged the vehicle's battery is used to refrigerate the van.

Electric-Cable Assemblies (ECA)

Electric-Cable Assemblies (ECA) proudly participates in their cities clean sweep program which is held every year on Earth Day in April. In 2010, ECA's associates cleaned out over five truckloads of garbage from the wooded area and streams surrounding their facility. All 50 of the company’s associates took part in this event.

J.F. Fredericks Tool Co., Inc.
Farmington, CT

Implement manufacturing processes that eliminate or significantly reduce the quantity or toxicity of a facility's waste stream and successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit.

The J.F. Fredericks Tool Co., Inc., has implemented and completed two successful environmental programs for the year 2010/2011. The first is a recycling program to eliminate the abundance of stored x-rays. The second is the installation of a bioremediating parts cleaner/degreaser. The machine effectively removes oil and grease from parts while maintaining its cleaning power. It is one of the safest, most effective ways to replace hazardous mineral solvent in manual parts cleaning applications. The machine also recycles the solvent thus decreasing cost of manufacturing as well as protecting the environment. J.F. Fredericks Tool Co., Inc., plans on continuing their high level of environmental consciousness by making continual improvements to their manufacturing environment.

NRG Energy, Inc.
Middletown, CT

Document and implement a facility-wide pollution prevention plan; improve public access to shore, waterfront, private lands, or streams through voluntary projects; adopt a vacant lot, park, community garden, strech of highway, or beach for a year; sponsor a river, beach, or neighborhood clean-up day; promote conservation and preservation of critical plant or animal habitats; and implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property.

NRG Energy, Inc., through its econrg program promotes an ongoing and extensive environmental business effort targeted at reducing NRG's environmental footprint. The program seeks ways to meet the challenges of climate change, clean air and the protection of our natural resources. NRG's operating facilities in Connecticut have implemented and participated in numerous environmental projects for the past 18 months that demonstrate econrg's efforts in the state. NRG facilities are located in Devon, Middletown, Montville, and Norwalk Harbor, and remote operating locations in Branford, Greenwich, and Torrington.

NRG's qualifying projects include:

Harborview Beach and Marsh Clean-up. For the past three years, Norwalk Harbor Station has worked with Harborview area residents to conduct a clean-up on the beach and marsh area.

Hoyt's Island Clean-up. Norwalk Harbor employees performed the first ever clean-up of Hoyt's Island in Norwalk. Approximately 4 rowboats of trash and miscellaneous debris were removed. This property is owned by the Norwalk Land Trust.

Connecticut River Source to Seas program. Middletown station is the lead sponsor for the Connecticut River Source to Seas Clean-up project and station personnel participate in the clean-up of the riverbank area near the facility.

Peregrine Falcon Habitat. For the past seven years, Devon Station employees have worked with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) to band peregrine falcon hatchlings that have hatched in a nesting box built by station personnel and located on site. Station pesonnel maintain a restricted area around the nest area to ensure protection of the breeding area. Five chicks were hatched and banded in 2010.

Osprey Nesting area. Norwalk Harbor, Devon and Montville stations have erected osprey nesting platforms at the sites. The platforms are monitored and several of them have been used for nests with hatchlings spotted.

Electronics Disposal/Recycling. Middletown and Montville Stations have established a program where employees can bring their personnel electronics (laptops, monitors, cell phones) to the station for recycling. Norwalk Harbor Station has established a program where employees may bring old CFL bulbs to the station for proper disposal.

Replacement of Gasoline Power Vehicle. Middletown Station has replaced its gasoline powered maintenance truck used on-site with the self-propelled maintenance vehicle. Norwalk Harbor Station has replaced its gasoline powered on-site vehicle with an electric vehicle.

Community Partnership. On July 15, 2010, NRG partnered with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) for "Get Outdoors Day" at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center. Projects completed included the restoration of the "Wheels in the Woods" universally accessible trail and general site rehabilitation.

OGS Technologies, Inc.
Cheshire, CT

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%.

OGS Technologies, Inc., in early February 2009 embarked on efforts to reduce the amount of water consumed in rinsewaters associated with plating and cleaning operations. Historically, high volumes of water are subsequently treated in a permitted wastewater treatment system. Working in conjunction with OGC's Quality Control Manager, a reduction of rinsewater flow rates was achieved with no adverse impact to the quality of products produced. From February 1, 2009 to January 31, 2011, OGS reduced its water usage by more than 15% while maintaining production levels throughout the year.

Philson Incorporated

Philson Incorporated for the past nine years, on or near Earth Day, initiates and sponsors the Annual SteeleBrook River Clean-Up. This past year was no exception, despite the rain. In 2010 the following participants were involved in the river haul : Jerry Billups, Ervin Quonenes, Lenny Savino, Mike Smegielski, Jasmin Batts, Edwin Alers, Antonio Decerbo, Paul Decerbo, Susan Schneiter, Tom Schneiter and John Wysmuller.

Pratt & Whitney
East Hartford, CT

Document and implement a facility-wide pollution prevention plan.

Pratt & Whitney (P&W) in East Hartford undertook a corporate initiative to reduce chemicals discharged into the Connecticut River. Over the last two years, P&W in East Hartford implemented process and procedural changes to reduce the discharge of target metals used in their processes. Over the course of two years the site reduced the discharge of target pollutants by 60%.

During 2008, the site discharged 566 pounds of target pollutants. Following changes to internal systems, target pollutant discharge was reduced to 225 pounds during 2010. None of the target pollutants discharged exceeded regulatory permit limits. Key contributors were John Wotus, Virginia Young, Mark Lemoine, Jeff Thompson, Mark Hoff, Jason Thompson, Paul Iwasaki and the Waste Treatment operators.

S&S Worldwide
Colchester, CT

Donate significant time or resources to assist with environmental projects.

S&S Worldwide held their 3rd Annual "Clean to the Green" event. They enrolled between 50 and 75 participants (employees on paid time and local volunteers) to walk the town of Colchester and pick up all trash in sight.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. via Universal Recycling Technologies

Successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. made a commitment to provide a voluntary electronics recycling solution to Connecticut residents. In partnership with Universal Recycling Technologies, and the Borough of Naugatuck Public Works Department, and others, Samsung ensured the safe collection and recycling of nearly 90,000 pounds of electronic waste products by financing two unique free, electronics recycling events the spring of 2010.

Schick Manufacturing, Inc.
Milford, CT

Successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit.

Schick Manufacturing, Inc., has implemented a facility wide recycling program which has dramatically increased the amount of waste materials recycled at the Milford site. Partnering with their recycler "A Greener Solution," Schick recycled 4.8 million pounds of scrap material and increased the recycling rate from 39% in 2009 to 89% in 2010. Materials recycled include cardboard, metals, and various types of plastic packaging wastes (PVC, PET, films, shrink wrap, etc.) Through this program, Schick was able to eliminate two 30 yard trash compactors.
This elimination produced an energy savings, eliminated potential spills of hydraulic oil, and produced employee safety benefits. Through this program and other waste management practices, Schick is now a 99.98% landfill free facility.

Spirol International Corporation
Danielson, CT

Implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property.

Spirol International Corporation operates a 64,000 square-foot manufacturing plant and corporate offices in Danielson, Connecticut. The site includes a 15 acre parcel alongside the Five Mile River and Whetstone Brook. The Spirol manufacturing facility produces coiled pins, slotted pins, solid pins and brass inserts. Historically, wastewater and sludge were discharged to a series of earthen lagoons to the west of the facility. A series of environmental investigations determined that extensive contamination was present, including high levels of cadmium, zinc, and cyanide. Remediation of these lagoons was completed in 2007 and 2008. During 2009, Spirol began restoration of the site to encourage replenishment of native wildlife and fauna. The former lagoons were transformed into a one half mile walking trail bordered by the Five Mile River and Whetstone Brook. Spirol employees erected bird houses which are now inhabited by Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis).

Local residents have reported sightings of White tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) grazing in the field.
In May 2010 during an onsite investigation, field scientists were thrilled to find a large snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) laying eggs in the middle of the field between the Spirol facility and the Five Mile River. The following morning, three additional turtles were spotted layings eggs, in this same field. All four nests were located in the areas formerly occupied by the lagoons. The nesting sites were flagged to prevent disturbance and are closely monitored by Spirol employees to see evidence of baby turtles.

Sterling Engineering Corporation
Winsted, CT

Certify to ISO 14001.

Sterling Engineering Corporation began implementation of a documented environmental management system in mid 2009. Sterling's ISO 14001 based environmental management system (EMS) documentation includes policies, procedures and appropriate operational controls for effective management of the activities and procesess related to precision machining. Sterling's EMS was assessed to the ISO 14001 requirements by a third party certified/accredited registrar on May 4-7, 2010. The third party registrar determined that Sterling Engineering Corporation's environmental management system met the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard and recommended registration.

The Durham Manufacturing Company
Durham, CT

Successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit.

In the past, the Durham Manufacturing Company disposed of pallets, paper and plastic items in the general trash dumpster on-site that would be picked up and taken to the landfill. Corrugated scrap was placed in a separate container, but required a separate pick up and drop off by their waste hauler.

In late 2008 and 2009, Durham implemented a program whereby waste containers were located throughout the facility (both offices and factory) to collect copy paper, colored paper (i.e. catalogs, etc.) bottles and recyclables. These containers are taken to the local transfer station and placed in the recycle bins. Corrugated scrap and pallets are now being collected by a supplier for re-use and recycle. The return haul is taking place on a trailer that previously would have been empty upon its return to the supplier. All flourescent light bulbs, batteries, ballasts and computer equipment are now being sent to a recycler.

The Orchards at Southington
Southington, CT

Execute changes that reduce annual energy or water consumption rates by more than 15%; reduce or eliminate the use of elemental mercury or products containing elemental mercury; implement a facility-wide integrated pest management program; successfully implement an innovative and unique pollution prevention plan or recycling program that generates an environmental benefit; execute an innovative purchasing program that promotes the procurement of recycled and environmentally preferable products; separate organic materials for composting or animal feed; promote conservation and preservation of critical plant or animal habitats and implement habitat enhancements for fish or wildlife on public or private property.

The Orchards at Southington is a non-profit senior independent and assisted living community of 90 apartments. This organization is committed to help keep our enviornment clean, safe and beatiful for future generations. They have converted to using all green seal or DEF products for daily cleaning throughout the building.

All paper towel and soap dispensers throughout the building were replaced with motion sensors dispensers, a move that has cut down the waste and expense of these materials by 50%. A building wide collection of all white office paper (which is made from recycled paper), glass and plastic bottles, metal cans, newspapers, cardboard is done daily and is recycled by their refuge company. A community effort of collecting and redeeming five cent deposit bottle and cans continues and is going into its fourth year.

CRT Recycling, Inc., is used to collect and recycle or refurbish discarded computer and electronic devices, keeping them out of the landfill. Staff is encouraged to bring their own e-waste from home as well. Empty copier ink cartridges are recycled back to their supplier.

The facility has been proactive with green initiatives in the following areas: energy and water conservation, environmentally responsible purchasing, grounds maintenance, recycling, pest management, environmental practices of the dietary department, energy and water conservation, waste minimization and responsible purchasing, global awareness and responsible stewardship of the land.

Energy star rated appliances are used in the kitchen and regular preventive maintenance checks of all equipment are performed.
Organic waste composting is the number one way a food service business can reduce its carbon footprint by diverting and managing waste. The facility purchased a Mantis Twin Composter to turn organic food scraps into useful compost. Their grounds maintenance contractor has agreed to use the compost for Serenity Garden and grounds, as well as making compost available to their local garden club for use in civic projects around town.

The Orchards are contracted with Western Massachusetts Rendering Co., Inc., to collect their used fryolator oil.
They purchase organic grains, rice and pasta, also products that are "American Humane Certified," items containing egss laid by range free hens.
Efforts to green the kitchen extend to cleaning supplies. The facility now uses a 20/1 solution of white vinegar and water to clean glass top tables. A 50/50 solution to clean tile floors and straight vinegar to clean the flat top grill and steam table. This replaces caustic chemicals and glass cleaners.

Ms. Hooper researched and applied for a natural habitat certification program endorsed by the Audubon Society, The National Wildlife Federation, and the North American Butterfly Association. This certification has been given to the facility’s Serenity Garden as a Natural Habitat for Butterflies. Honey bees, bumble bees and other pollinators.
