This Just In : There are two new programs that have recently come on line which may not be well known but have a lot to offer as a way of helping in crisis situations. Building on some tried and true successful approaches to helping veterans, VA has created a Veteran Combat Call Center 1-877-927-8387 (WAR-VETS) which is a 24/7 confidential call center where combat veterans and their families can talk to Counseling Staff that are also Combat veterans about concerns, difficulties or issues they may be facing as they transition back into the community and family responsibilities. This is the most recent refinement of the “Veterans Helping Veterans” programs which have proven to be effective in helping veterans and their families navigate their way through unsettling times, personal problems and support systems that can be frustrating and disappointing at times.
VA has also come a long way in understanding the role families can play in helping and supporting veterans as they prepare for deployments and transition from military to civilian life. Coaching Into Care is also a confidential Nationwide Call Center 1-888-823-7458 which operates 7am-7pm Eastern Time or internet contact CoachingIntoCare@va.gov
. This is a special program for Family members and friends of veterans who are uncertain about how to help their veteran in problem situations. The Call Center is not necessarily a “crisis line” however it is a readily available resource which is staffed with professional that can assist in a circumstance of this nature. As the name suggests, staff will “Coach” callers by providing information, suggestions and support for the particular concern. The main focus of this program is to provide callers with ideas on how to talk to their veteran or provide encouragement and strategies on how to help their veteran get the help they need. This is not a one shot deal. Callers can call back for more support or feedback about what is or is not working or other resources that might be helpful. What is at the heart of this program is simply to help those who care about veterans have the tools and support they need to bring their veteran home.
