Service activities:
My service responsibilities include the analyses of samples submitted to the Department of Analytical Chemistry by various state agencies. These samples include analyses for pesticide residues in produce; polychlorinated biphenyls and volatile organic compounds in soils, water, and air; and the analysis of a wide variety of miscellaneous matrices for volatile organic contaminants.

Research activities:
My primary research interest is the determination of organic pollutants in environmental matrices, including both the study of the environmental fate of chemicals and the development of new analytical methods.  Currently this interest has led to several research projects related to pesticides and honey bee health.  In one project, we are determining the typical background exposure to pesticide residues while honey bees forage for pollen in Connecticut.  In a second project are determining the concentration of systemic pesticides that are toxic to honey bees in plant pollen and nectar.  We are trying to determine if differing application rates and modes can be used to reduce the levels of these pesticides in pollen and nectar, thereby reducing honey bee exposure to these chemicals.
